City Gas powered Gas Heater with E8 Error Code Replacement at River Isles on 15 Sep 2025

City Gas powered Gas Heater with E8 Error Code Replacement

Our service team was recently contacted by a homeowner at River Isles, a popular leasehold condominium along Punggol Central, regarding an E8 error code appearing on their city gas powered gas heater. The unit had stopped functioning, leaving the household without hot water and raising safety concerns.

🔍 Site Finding

Upon arriving for the site inspection, our technicians—working under the supervision of both a Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) and a PUB Licensed Plumber—conducted a comprehensive fault diagnosis. It was confirmed that the E8 fault code was being triggered due to:

  • A gas leak that exceeded safe operating limits.
  • Signs of internal water leakage, indicating deterioration of the system’s internal components.

A gas concentration check was conducted using a Honeywell BW™ Max XT II Multi-Gas Detector. The device detected a leak level that reached +OL (Over Limit)—an indication that the gas reading exceeded the detector’s safe display threshold.

Given these findings, and to ensure the safety of the occupants, the gas supply valve to the existing gas heater powered by City Gas was immediately shut off. The unit was deemed unsafe and non-compliant with current gas installation regulations. We recommended a full replacement with a modern, compliant model.

🔧 Replacement Job Scope – Macro MA-20WOD Installation & Safety Upgrades

The replacement process began with safety as the top priority. Our scope of work included the removal of the faulty unit and installation of a new Macro brand MA-20WOD city gas powered gas heater, designed for higher efficiency and full regulatory compliance.

1. Gas Isolation and Safety Preparation

  • Shut off the gas supply valve to isolate the appliance and eliminate leak risk.
  • Site was secured and communicated to the homeowner for safety compliance.

2. Deinstallation of Faulty Unit

  • Old gas heater removed safely.
  • All corroded pipe fittings and water-damaged components were dismantled and properly disposed of.

3. New Heater Installation – Macro MA-20WOD

  • The new Macro MA-20WOD was selected for its efficiency and compatibility with City Gas.
  • Installation was performed by a trained technician and overseen by the LGSW and PUB Licensed Plumber to ensure that all work met Singapore’s strict safety standards.

4. System Upgrades and Retrofitting

  • Installed a new gas valve for improved control.
  • A gate valve was added on the water pipe for future maintenance convenience.
  • Replaced old connections with new stainless steel piping (within 1 meter) to resist corrosion.
  • Equal potential bonding was added to ensure full grounding and prevent electrical hazards.

5. Control Panel Replacement

  • The old wall-mounted control panel was replaced with a new compatible unit provided with the Macro MA-20WOD.
  • All electrical connections were re-terminated and tested to ensure proper communication between the control panel and the heater.
  • New panel was mounted securely and synced to the system for immediate use.
  • After all the connections and testing for the control panel, touch up the wall to restore it back.

6. Final Gas Testing and Certification

  • Conducted pressure testing under Gas Supply Regulations 21, adhering to SS 608:2024 Code of Practice for Gas Installation.
  • Verified flow, leakage integrity, and gas stability.
  • Upon successful testing, a Gas Testing Certificate was issued and signed by the LGSW, confirming full compliance.

The gas testing certificate, signed by the Licensed Gas Service Worker, provides the homeowner with not just peace of mind, but also documented proof of compliance with the latest SS 608:2024 regulations.

Our proactive installation measures—including equal potential bonding, stainless steel piping, and proper valve isolation— set the foundation for long-term safety and system efficiency.

How do I know my gas system is safe, and who can declare it safe or dangerous?

In Singapore, the safety of your gas system must be assessed in accordance with the Gas Supply Regulations and the SS 608:2014 – Code of Practice for Gas Installation.

Only a Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) is legally authorised to assess your gas installation and determine whether it is safe or poses a danger.

The LGSW will conduct a final pressure test and compliance checks, after which a Gas Testing Certificate will be issued if the system passes all safety criteria. This certificate is the official declaration of a safe gas system, as required by law.

If no certificate is issued, or testing is incomplete — the gas system should be considered non-compliant or unsafe.
